Myra Gardiner to John Newton            4 August 1796

1796 anniversary

To the Revd John Newton on the 71st anniversary of his Birth Day

August 4th 1796

Myra 96

1.
No heathen muse will I implore,
Her aid for to impart
But try in verse to write once more,
The wishes of my Heart.

2.
On this blest Day, that gave him birth,
Who is my kindest Friend;
May every Happiness on earth,
His peaceful Hours attend.

3.
Still may that Power who rules above
On each returning Year
Increase the force of heavenly Love
And banish human fear.

4.
That Power Almighty whose command
Becalm’d the boisterous wave
And from the burning Afric’s sand
Your precious Life did save.

5.
With Heart sincere to that great Power
Do I submissive pray,
Still to avert your mortal hour
And here prolong your stay.

6.
Late may your burning sun decline
With rays serene, and bright,
Your works in future ages shine,
T’instruct, and to delight.

7.
And oh that Myra’s latest breath
The force of grace may prove
Deliver’d from the second Death,
To reign with you above.
