Olney Hymns Book 3 Hymn 102
The peace which God alone reveals...
Manuscript Hymn No. After Sermon: 3
SHORT HYMNS: AFTER SERMON
Hymn 102
The peace which God alone reveals,
And by his word of grace imparts,
Which only the believer feels, (a)
Direct and keep, and cheer your hearts:
And may the Holy Three in One,
The Father, Word, and Comforter,
Pour an abundant blessing down
On every soul assembled here!
(a) Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Short Hymns
Thursday 28 January 1779: ‘I finished transcribing the Hymns, only that I have a few short ones to make, suited to the introduction and conclusion of divine worship.’
The last hymn dated in Newton’s diary, No. 334, was written for 1 January 1779, which may also have been the date for No. 335. But judging from their sequence in his ms notebook, some may have been written prior to that, possibly from around November 1778.
With no certainty of dates, some perhaps pertinent quotes:
Tuesday 24 November 1778
Yesterday employed on the Hymns. Warned others of the roaring, devouring lion, but am too little disposed to watchfulness myself. [1 Peter 5:8-10 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.]
Sunday 20 December 1778
Mr Robinson preached afternoon and evening – at my request without notes, and he preached well. I praise thee for fixing him in thy service at Leicester. May he long be there a burning and a shining light. Mr R’s texts were Galatians 4:4, Philippians 4:4 [Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.] |
